The New York Yankees placed left-hander A.J. Happ on the 10-day disabled list Thursday after he was diagnosed with hand, foot and mouth disease earlier this week.

The Yankees sent Happ home on Tuesday after the diagnosis. They recently acquired the 35-year-old left-hander from the Toronto Blue Jays.

New York also recalled right-hander Luis Cessa and infielder Luke Voit from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and optioned infielder Tyler Wade to the same affiliate.

Happ has made one start for the Yankees since joining the organization. He gave up one run and three over six innings in a victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

Overall, Happ is 11-6 with a 4.05 ERA in 21 starts, with 132 strikeouts and 36 walks allowed in 120 innings.

Currently, in his 12th season, he is 103-82 with a 3.94 ERA and has recorded double figures in wins in each of the past five seasons.

Cessa, 26, is 1-2 with a 3.10 ERA in seven appearances (three starts) with the Yankees. He is 3-1 with a 2.10 ERA in six minor league starts at three levels this season.

Voit was recently acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals and is 2-for-11 in the majors this season. The 27-year-old is batting a combined .296 with 10 homers and 37 RBIs for three minor league teams this season.

Wade was batting .186 with one homer and five RBIs in 25 games with New York. The 23-year-old batted .270 with two homers and 18 RBIs in 66 games at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre earlier this season.

Happ is the second prominent big league pitcher in New York to recently come down with hand, foot and mouth disease. New York Mets star Noah Syndergaard was recently activated from the disabled list after also being diagnosed with the viral disease, which is more common in children.
