Stealing bio-metric data using WhatsApp: Latest viral rumor 

The WhatsApp message further alerts, in case one scans his/her thumb about the risk of hacking one's information pertaining to bank details by accessing Aadhar biometric details.

WhatsApp has been used for spreading much misinformation. In its latest addition, the messaging platform is now being used to spread an unsubstantiated message stating that one should avoid scanning one's thumb on any greeting message asking to do so for seeing the message.   

The WhatsApp message further alerts, in case one scans his/her thumb, about the risk of hacking one's information pertaining to bank details by accessing Aadhar biometric details. The viral message reads as below:

"To all my friends, be careful of some msgs in WhatsApp that asks you to put your thumb in a screen to unlock a msg like happy Independence day or happy new year... Beware of these msgs and don't put your thumb anywhere. Scanning your thumb impression will give the app owners access to your biometric data, this is very serious as your Aadhar biometric is linked to PAN, banks etc. be very careful and spread the message !! cybercrime on the rise now.#TRAI"

The above message is unsubstantiated as to the knowledge of Devdiscourse, no such alert has been issued by any Government agency including TRAI.

However, it is always advisable on the part of citizens to stay alert and aware of such cybercrimes. For the sake of spreading awareness, readers of this story are requested to forward it to their social acquaintances.
