Siem Reap is soon going to get a new commercial center after the Council for the Development of Cambodia approved the investment for the project.

Makro, the international cash and carry brand will build the mall. The commercial center project is expected to create close to 150 jobs for the locals.

The project in Prasat Bakong district will cost around USD 19 million, as revealed by CDC.

The resort town in northwest Cambodia is growing at a fast pace as a market and has been attracting larger amounts of tourists. The setting up of a commercial center is going to boost the tourism sector as well.

Associate director of CBRE Cambodia, James Hodge regarding the project said: "Businesses may respond by considering prices, the quality of the service or environment they offer to customers."

“Usually competition is a good thing for consumers as it ensures businesses remain up-to-date and listen to customers in order to remain relevant."

Talking about modernization he further added: "Provincial towns and cities will follow in Phnom Penh’s footsteps, developing modern format retail to suit demand."

"Certainly a provincial town or city that benefits from high numbers of tourists will also interest retail developers. They see an opportunity to tap into another source of potential customers."

The first supermarket that Makro opened was in December 2017 in Phnom Penh. The project was a joint effort of Siam Makro and Cambodia’s LYP Group Company Limited.
