Mariners' Paxton avoids serious injury after taking line drive

- United States
Seattle Mariners left-hander James Paxton exited his Tuesday start against the Oakland A's after getting drilled on the left forearm by a first-inning line drive from Jed Lowrie.
The Mariners announced that X-rays were negative and listed Paxton's status as "day to day" with a left forearm contusion.
With one out and a run already in after a leadoff homer from Marcus Semien, Paxton threw a 96 mph fastball on a 2-1 pitch to Lowrie, who sent it right back to the mound.
The ball ricocheted off Paxton's arm toward the first base line. Paxton started to run after it, then stopped and started walking toward second base in obvious pain. The trainers came out to look at Paxton's swollen arm, and the lefty immediately left the game without trying to throw a warmup pitch.
Former Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, the club's new long reliever, took over on the mound.
Paxton, 29, is 10-5 with a 3.68 ERA in 24 starts this year. The British Columbia native threw a no-hitter against the Blue Jays in Toronto on May 8.
