Addis Ababa in collaboration with the African Girls Can Code Initiative (AGCCI) 2018-2022 is holding the first coding camp for girls as a part of the ICT for sustainable development goals.

The AGCCI is an initiative by the UN Women, the African Union, ITU Telecom World and support from the Danish Embassy in Addis.

The UN Women Executive Director, Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka talked about the need to bridge the gender gap in digital literacy in her keynote speech at the Smart Africa Women’s Summit on the 12th of May this year saying that it is critical to empowering the women and girls of Africa.

ICTs are useful in facilitating education for women and girls, helping them with their literacy and education, improving their job skills and also as a great mean to be independent enough to exercise their human rights and participation in the government.

This program will aim for a closure of that gap and hence empowering the women of the continent with an extra set of social skills in the form of digital literacy.

The UN Women representative to Ethiopia, Madam Letty Chiwara, welcomed the girls for the camp by implicating the belief that the future of Africa lies in young girls announcing them as the future leaders of the continent.

Her Excellency and the Commissioner for Social Affairs to girls, Amira Elfadil Mohammed Elfadil has vested all her hope on the growing African girls to lead the nations towards a bright and equal future.

The AGCCI will be imparting training to the girls to be programmers, designers, creators so as to make them conscious and skilled in taking up a higher career in the field of coding and ICT.
