The world is dependent on oil and coal. The coal consumption is on the decline worldwide due to awareness regarding environmental degradation and creating a sustainable environment.

Yet, there are countries that are heavily reliant on the coal for their electricity generation and other daily purposes. The coal can witness the decline in the consumption pattern around the world, but it will still play an effective role in the base load requirement.

There are different types of coal that are being used in the industry namely, coking coal, steam coal with different purposes. The coal

As shown in the table above, the coal prices are on the rise after a steady decline in the prices. The price rise shows the issues surrounding the thermal sector like stringent environmental issues, coal cess, and fiscal policies supporting the cleaner form of energy sources.

It is evident from the table that the prices after 2011 were on the decline and it took a jump in the year 2016.

The import of coal is still an ongoing phenomenon as coal is still a major source of fuel. The top five countries as per a report in year 2016 are Japan, India, China, Korea and Taipei. While Japan shares 18% of total share of coal imports in the world, India shares 15% of the same.

As the need of coal is still in the market, the price is likely to remain high. The renewable energy is not in the position to take the role of continuous energy generation globally and hence the role of coal will still be relevant in the world energy consumption.

Sustainable Development Goal 7 talks about affordable and clean energy. While thermal energy is affordable, but the efforts to make it a cleaner form of energy is in process.
