Microsoft acquires social-learning platform Flipgrid

Flipgrid amplifies student's voice and supports student development of global empathy as they immerse themselves in each other’s learning processes and perspectives.

Microsoft has announced the acquisition of Flipgrid, a leading video learning platform, to continue its commitment to educators and their students. Just like Office 365, Flipgrid will also be freely available for all educators.

Flipgrid is the leading video discussion platform used by more than 20 million of PreK to Ph.D. students, educators, and families across 180 countries around the world. Flipgrid brings the back row to the front and helps learners of all ages find their voices, share their voices, and respect the diverse voices of others.

"Today, I’m thrilled to announce the Flipgrid team will be joining Microsoft and embarking on its next exciting chapter. To bring the power of video-based social learning to everyone, we’ll be making Flipgrid free for all educators and offering prorated refunds to everyone who has purchased a subscription from Flipgrid in the last year," said  Eran Megiddo, CVP, Education, Microsoft, in a blog post.

Fans of Flipgrid can rest assured the Flipgrid they know and love, in joining Microsoft, will continue to grow and thrive across the Microsoft, Google and partner ecosystems, all while retaining its distinct brand, culture and team. Furthermore, Flipgrid will continue to be a safe, secure place for students and teachers to communicate in alignment with Microsoft’s GDPR, FERPA and COPPA compliant privacy architecture, the blog added.
