Peru's minister of Agriculture announces creation of National Seed Institute

Agreement with corn producers will promote the improvement of their quality of life.

The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Gustavo Mostajo Ocola, announced the creation of the National Seed Institute to ensure the supply of quality inputs for agricultural production in the country.

As part of his work tour of the interior of the country and as announced by the premier on his last visit to San Martin, the minister who was accompanied by the regional governor of San Martin, Víctor Noriega, met with the representatives of the producers of corn to reach the proposal to improve the production and commercialization of this crop.

 

"We are going to create the national seed institute, this institute will be in charge of promoting and controlling the production, certification, and commercialization of quality seeds, the world asking us for healthy products and Peru has a great variety," said the minister when addressing the first actions that the sector will adapt to boost the reactivation of agricultural activity at the national level, as per Andina.

 

In his speech, Minister Mostajo told the representatives of the associations of corn producers, to have more than 40 years of knowing the work of the farmer and what it is to dedicate himself to this activity, for which he announced that "in this government we are going to make management for the next generation transparent and honest. We want to ask the people to help us work on it, "he said.

 

At the end of the work meeting, the owner of the Minagri committed to dialogue directly with the small farmers in situ, in the main production areas of hard yellow corn. The minister also announced that the producers' organizations will be strengthened with the support of the regional government, but aimed at the market, with the aim of directly marketing them, seeking the elimination of intermediaries.

 

"The Minagri will implement three business plans or productive reconversion projects aimed at improving the production and quality of hard yellow corn, which includes inputs for planting (seed, fertilizers, and agrochemicals)," he said.

 

In addition, it will provide equipment for harvesting and drying hard yellow corn, as well as technical assistance."This intervention has an estimated cost of up to 2 million soles, to be executed between 2018 and 2020," he said.
