New agreement inked between QRCS, IRCS and UNICEF to pursue further humanitarian cooperation

As part of the early recovery program, QRCS and UNICEF will work together on water and sanitation, for the benefit of 1,530,000 Iraqis in different parts of the city of Mosul.

Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has signed new agreements with the United Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Iraqi Red Crescent Society (IRCS) to pursue further humanitarian cooperation.

The agreements were signed by Ali Hassan Al-Hammadi, Secretary-General of QRCS, during his visit to Baghdad, Iraq, to participate in the 10th Regional Conference of the Red Crescent and Red Cross Societies in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

The purpose of these agreements, said Mr. Al-Hammadi, is to help Iraq to go ahead with its reconstruction endeavors. He commended the valuable cooperation with the UN agency and IRCS in the best interest of the vulnerable in the war-torn country.

As part of the early recovery program, QRCS and UNICEF will work together on water and sanitation, for the benefit of 1,530,000 Iraqis in different parts of the city of Mosul.

In coordination with the health, water, and education authorities of Nineveh Governorate, a series of works will be implemented, including rehabilitation of the water supply network, 100 schools, and 15 health centers.

Other activities are water desalination training for local water authority workers, quality control checks for drinking water, upgrading of water treatment technology, provision of hygiene services at schools, and distribution of hygiene kits to students.

On the same day, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed with IRCS to renew the bilateral framework agreement. In a meeting with Mohamed AbdelSattar Mohamed, Secretary-General of IRCS, Mr. Al-Hammadi discussed the humanitarian situation in Iraq, mechanisms of joint projects, and potential opportunities of humanitarian cooperation.
