Alibaba’s new job advertisements heavily criticized for gender discrimination, according to the Human Right Watch report shows that the demands of the female workforce in China is deteriorating. The discrimination in the hiring process in contributing to a drop in the female workforce and a widening gender pay gap.

Many private companies and private bodies are giving advertisement entitled “only men need to apply” while other job ads which are recruiting women applicants wants them to be trim and aesthetically pleasing.

These ads reflect the traditional and deeply discriminatory views of women that they are less capable than men and women will not be committed to their jobs because of their role as family caregivers.

Alibaba leading e-commerce giant in China was also accused of repeatedly using the lure of an attractive female co-worker in its recruitment campaigns, they often describe them as “Ali beauties” and Goddess on social media.

The government jobs in China are also posted in a similar way as ads for china’s 2018 national civil service called for male only or men preferred. While adverts for female train conductor required them to be trim, fashionable and beautiful.

Although some women have succeeded in taking employees to court over discriminatory job adverts, the court’s judgment against the firm are negligible and not a warning at all.

Although #MeToo movement exposing sexual harassment has recently emerged trending in China but the authorities have taken control of it by deleting social media post and closed related topic forums.
