Algeria on Tuesday launched a 530-km gas pipeline to supply Tamanrasset, the largest city in the south, with 700,000 cubic meters a day, the chief executive of Sonatrach said.

"The project costs about USD 190 million," Abdelmoumen Ould Kaddour told reporters during a visit to the city near the border with Mali.

Algeria produces 94 billion cubic meters of gas annually and exports 55 billion cubic meters of gas. The new pipeline is connected to the Ain Saleh gas field.

However, growing domestic consumption is a challenge for Algeria's national energy company Sonatrach, prompting its management to explore more fields and boost the production of obsolete fields.

Earlier reported that the former director general of local authorities, Azzedine Belkacem speaking on the International Congress on Renewable Energy, Energy Security, and Food Security, stressed that the energy transition assumes that a high priority is given to the development of local resources, centralized management energy has prevailed in Algeria, lagging behind other countries of comparable level.
