Karnataka seeks Rs 4,000 cr central assistance to implement agri-infra projects

The Karnataka government today urged the Centre to provide about Rs 4,000 crore assistance for developing new agri-market yards, rice technology park, godowns and other infrastructure facilities.

Karnataka Cooperation Minister Bandeppa Khashempur called on Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh to discuss the matter here.

In the meeting, Khashempur also requested the central government to clear the pending amount of Rs 1,209.99 crore for undertaking procurement of crops at the minimum support price (MSP).

"The Cooperation Minister requested the centre to provide Rs 4,000 crore financial assistance to implement various projects related to the department of cooperation and APMC," the state government said in a statement.

Khashempur asked the central government to provide 25 per cent of the total project cost of Rs 200 crore for developing a mega market yard of APMC (agricultural produce market committee) at Ranebennur in Haveri district.

He also sought financial support for setting up of a rice technology park in Koppal district, which is estimated to cost Rs 200 crore as also for providing basic infrastructure facilities like roads, covered auction platforms and godowns in 107 wholesale APMC mandis.

That apart, the state minister requested the centre to create a separate corpus of Rs 5,000 crore with the National Bank For Agriculture And Rural Development (NABARD) to offer the state government utilise the fund at zero interest to take care of procurement operations.

Senior officials from the union agriculture ministry as well as from the state were also present in the meeting.
