California’s 10th lawsuit against the US EPA

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra filing a lawsuit.

This lawsuit marks California’s 10th lawsuit against the EPA and its 32nd against the Trump administration. Under the Clean Air Act (CAA),Enviormental Protection Agency's (EPA) sets national standards for vehicle tailpipe emissions of certain pollutants.

A week before when President Donald Trump took office, Obama administration concluded an  (EPA) review of the standards for cars and light trucks for model years 2022-2025.

In his statement of april 2nd EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt said "Cooperative federalism doesn’t mean that one state can dictate standards for the rest of the country. EPA will set a national standard for greenhouse gas emissions that allows auto manufacturers to make cars that people both want and can afford."

He also said "“The Obama Administration's determination was wrong because Obama’s EPA cut the Midterm Evaluation process short with politically charged expediency, made assumptions about the standards that didn’t comport with reality, and set the standards too high.”

California is set to argue the EPA's determination on April 2nd when it sided with automakers and said the standards should be scrapped.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said through a spokeswoman "We’re not looking to pick a fight with the Trump administration, but when the stakes are this high for our families’ health and our economic prosperity we have a responsibility to do what is necessary to defend them."
