IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, Rockefeller’s 100 Resilient Cities (100 RC) and the Global Innovation Fund (GIF), are supporting a second workshop as part of the Water Innovation Platform for Africa (WIPA). IFC, 100 RC and GIF, are co-founders of WIPA, designed to help water utilities in Sub-Saharan Africa meet the Sustainable Development Goals with a focus on clean water and improved sanitation.

To be held at the NWSC - The Ugandan National Water and Sewerage Corporation, Kampala, Uganda, on July 18, 2018, the WIPA workshop will introduce well-tested, new technologies into the African water sector, to support local water utilities in implementing these solutions.  The workshop, being run by Isle Utilities in partnership with the African Water Association (AfWA), will bring together representatives from regional water utilities and the World Bank Group.

Through the workshop series, the WIPA aims to enable African utilities to engage with new and resilient technologies and processes that have been proven and adopted elsewhere, but are also suited to African local market conditions. The Platform helps identify solutions in the African water sector that improve service, increase efficiency, reduce cost and help mitigate climate change impact.

George Butler, Water Specialist for IFC, said, “IFC is committed to finding solutions to difficult problems in emerging markets. By supporting the Water Innovation Platform for Africa, IFC encourages collaboration between water utilities and technology providers to deploy innovations that improve water and sanitation services for customers.”

A rigorous due diligence process is used to screen new technologies so only the best solutions are showcased at these WIPA workshops.  Water utilities could then choose to carry out trials or pilots on these technologies which suit their needs.

“GIF is pleased to support such an initiative alongside IFC and Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities. Finding and scaling innovative approaches to clean water and sanitation is critical to achieving the SDGs and one that GIF is focused on supporting,” said Alix Zwane, GIF’s CEO. “The Africa Water Innovation Platform aligns well with our other efforts in this space, including the Water Innovation Engine.”

The next Africa Water Innovation Platform meeting will be held in mid-2019.
