Under the flagship programme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Mission, 8000 new toilets have been constructed in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. The total target is of 15,000 toilets target for the year 2018 which is most likely achievable.

The main motive behind the mission is to make Kathua Open Defecation Free (ODF). Community toilets are also being constructed beside the set target.

The mission is being undertaken with full intensity in Kathua district and works have been speeded up to achieve the target before October 2.

A survey conducted in 2012 showed that almost 92884 households were without toilets. The target of constructing 41602 toilets has been completed till 2017.

Naresh Kumar Chandan, Block Development Officer, said that out of 17 Panchayat of Kerrian Gandyal Block, four Panchayats have so far been declared as ODF.
He further said this year he has been given the target of 4728 toilets, out of which 3100 toilets have been completed.
