The government plans to start implementing the second phase of a water supply project in Dar es Salaam in July of this year.

Deputy Minister of Water and Irrigation, Jumaa Aweso, said on Tuesday that the USD 45 million promoted by the World Bank would improve the city's water supply.

He said that the implementation of the first phase, with the loan provided by India of USD 32.77 million, was at 82 percent and will be completed in June 2018.

"The call for bids for the second phase will be announced shortly after obtaining a license from the World Bank and will be implemented in 15 months," Aweso said.

Mr. Aweso was responding to a question from Ms. Halima Mdee (Kawe-Chadema) who wanted to know about the government's strategy for water supply in areas without running water.

Mr. Aweso also said that access to water in Dar es Salaam is currently 75 percent.
