The Government of Kenya dispensed relief food to hundreds of flood victims in Makueni Sub County on Friday. Devolution Cabinet Secretary, Eugene Wamalwa, stated that the government is determined to provide food and non-food items to flood victims of the affected areas for restoration of the current condition.

The flood victims received 500 bags of maize, 200 bags of beans, 100 cartons of cooking oil and 150 blankets as an emergency intervention.

Wamalwa said that the government will also help the victims rebuild their houses that were destroyed by the floods. He also pledged to rehabilitate dams that were destroyed during the floods.

"The government will ensure that all homeless floods victims have new structures and they will continue to receive aid until their lives return to normal," said the Cabinet Secretary.

Walmalwa asked the County Government to collaborate with the National Government in order to lessen the effects of the floods.

"The two levels of government must work together to help the floods victims," he added.

Addressing the same event, Kivutha Kibwana, the Governor of Makueni demanded more intervention by the National Government, especially on water supply as most water resources were destroyed by floods.

Adding further, Kibwana said, "We need immediate intervention because many dams, irrigation schemes and other water sources were swept by the floods and this could lead to a major acute water shortage."

Kibwana asked the government to speed-up the construction of Thwake multipurpose dam so that it would help to cater the continual water shortage and food insecurity in the county.

Makueni was among those counties those had the worst effect of flood in the country. 28 people died while over 2,000 residents were affected by the floods, stated the County Commissioner Maalim Mohammed.
