The Centre of Indigenous Knowledge and Organisational Development (CIKOD) has initiated a project "Seed, Soil, and Culture Project" to enhance and promote the cultivation and consumption of indigenous seeds and foodstuff.

The scheme is expected to catalyze the Agro-ecology and Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) project planned to be implemented by CIKOD and partners in the communities around Lawra Municipal and Nadom District in the Upper West Region.

Mr Ben Guri, Executive Director of CIKOD, said that indigenous seed was meant for food and also to promote the culture. People need to learn about different uses of seeds.

The project is planned to help the local farmers to learn about types of seeds and the type of oil suitable for cultivation.

"One thing we have not learned about is that seed is not just sown on any type of soil," he said.

He highlighted the fact that cultivation of indigenous seeds will make people aware of food material, one can gather from the cultivation of indigenous seeds that can be used to enhance the nutrition rates of families.

The project is being sponsored by New Field Foundation and is made to support farmers to bring their culture to the stage that illustrates how their beliefs, values, language, ethics, art, ways of learning and traditional farming practices embody agro-ecology.
