Oakland Athletics to scrap traditional season ticket sales for 2019
The Oakland Athletics have scrapped traditional season ticket sales for the 2019 season in favor of a membership program, the team announced Monday.
"To better meet the evolving needs of our fans, we are changing our approach to membership. This flexible model is designed to serve both fans who want a more traditional reserved seat plan and those who desire a more flexible and social experience," A's COO Chris Giles said in a prepared statement.
The new program is called A's Access. Members who pay a fee to join will receive general admission tickets to every regular-season home game, a reserved seat plan and exclusive member benefits. The plans start at $240 per year, according to the team website.
In a news release, the A's said it is the "first program of its kind" in major league baseball.
"From access to every game to special member concessions pricing, we're focused on maximizing the value proposition for members. We are inviting our fans to truly become members of the A's," Giles said.
Among the benefits, subscribers will receive 50 per cent off concessions, 25 per cent off merchandise and parking benefits. Fans also will have the opportunity to upgrade seats.
The A's Access plans are available for 10- to 81-game plans and go on sale Friday. Anyone who buys a 2019 plan this season will have the chance to buy 2018 postseason tickets. The A's enter play Monday in third place in the tough American League West, still with a shot at both a wild-card berth and the division crown.
The team drew the most fans to a single game in Major League Baseball this season when the A's played the Giants on July 21 and 56,310 fans poured into the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. It was the largest crowd for a baseball game in stadium history.
