The Philadelphia Phillies acquired veteran catcher Wilson Ramos in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named or cash considerations, both teams announced shortly before Tuesday's trade deadline.

To make room for Ramos on the Phillies' 40-man roster, the team designated left-handed reliever Zac Curtis, 26, for assignment.

Ramos, who turns 31 next month, is currently on the disabled list recovering from a strained hamstring he suffered on July 14 shortly before the All-Star break. The injury prevented him from starting his first All-Star Game and appearing in his second in the past three seasons.

According to NBC Sports Philadelphia, Ramos was slated to catch a live bullpen session over the weekend but that Tampa Bay's staff believes Ramos remains a few weeks from a healthy return.

A nine-year veteran, Ramos is hitting .297 with 14 home runs and 53 RBIs in 78 games this season, getting most of his at-bats in Tampa Bay's cleanup spot in the lineup.

He will be a free agent after this season.

Originally groomed in the Minnesota Twins organization, Ramos has a .271 career batting average with 108 homers and 409 RBIs with the Twins (2010), Washington Nationals (2010-16) and Rays (2017-18). According to MLB.com, the Nationals also were thought to have been pursuing Ramos.

The Phillies, baseball's youngest team, have gone with young players behind the plate this season: 25-year-old Jorge Alfaro and 26-year-old Andrew Knapp. Defensively the Phillies have the most passed balls and second-most wild pitches in the National League.

In another transaction, the Phillies traded right-handed pitcher Jacob Waguespack to Toronto for lefty Aaron Loup.

Loup, 30, appeared in 50 games for the Blue Jays this season, posting a 0-0 record and a 4.54 ERA. To make room on the roster, the Phillies designated infielder Trevor Plouffe for assignment.

Waguespack, 24, is a combined 4-6 with a 4.68 ERA between Triple-A and Double-A this season.
