Oakland's Athletics' Gossett to undergo Tommy John surgery
The team announced that Dr. Keith Meister examined Gossett in Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday and recommended that the pitcher have his right ulnar collateral ligament repaired.
The 25-year-old was 0-3 with a 5.18 ERA in 24 1/3 innings this season. He landed on the disabled list on June 5 after straining his right elbow flexor.
"We've been hit hard with that this year," A's manager Bob Melvin said, according to the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News. "You always talk about the depth in the rotation and trying to create as much depth as you can. To have this many guys go down, and be out as long as they (are), certainly hurts us. But it gives somebody else an opportunity."
Gossett started 18 games as a rookie in 2017, going 4-11 with a 6.11 ERA.
