A professor of mathematics at the University of Toronto, John Charles Fields organizer and president of the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians in Toronto raised the surplus funds for the award.

Fields Award goes to those who have made contributions that opened up whole fields of ideas for the development of highly abstract and integrative fields such as algebraic geometry and algebraic topology.
