South Africa’s participation at the Feira International de Maputo (FACIM) Trade Fair is a testament of the confidence it has in its neighbor, says South Africa’s High Commissioner to Mozambique, Mandisi Mpahlwa.

Mpahlwa said Mozambique is in the process of rebuilding its economy. The High Commissioner was speaking at the official opening of South Africa’s pavilion at the trade fair on Tuesday.

Mpahlwa identified Mozambique’s unfolding major economic development as one to look forward to.

“Mozambique’s economy is about to experience a rebuilding phase following devastating consequences previously and I am encouraged by the range of sectors and products represented in this year’s pavilion because they fall directly in line with what will soon be required in the country,” he said.

This as 23 local companies are showing off their wares and services at the fair.

The companies received assistance through the Department of Trade and Industry’s (dti’s) Export Marketing and Investment Assistance Scheme (EMIA). The companies’ trade specialty range from energy, vehicle air-conditioning, textiles, agro-processing, furniture, construction equipment, steel, portable water systems and hair products.

FACIM is Mozambique’s biggest annual fair which caters for a variety of products and services attracting the attention of companies from Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Mpahlwa further praised the warm relations between South Africa and Mozambique and its institutions and government departments for supporting South Africa’s objectives to participate at FACIM.

Director General of Mozambique Customs, Dr. Lourenco Sambo, has welcomed South African companies participating in the fair, adding that all will be done to assist them.

“The participation of 23 South Africa companies at FACIM is warmly received and we will strive to be of assistance in any way that we can and ensure that they are in line with the rules of doing business, which will ultimately simplify the way of trading.

“I would like to also extend an invitation to even more South African companies to come to explore the opportunities in Mozambique and urge those that are trading here to feel at home,” he said.

Meanwhile, South Africa is keen to reduce the current trade imbalance that exists between the two nations.

Total trade volume in 2017 stood at R51 billion with the trade balance between the two countries in 2017 standing at  R26.6 billion in favor of South Africa.

The trade fair will conclude on Monday.
