September call-up Ildemaro Vargas hit his first major league home run and had three RBIs, and Zack Godley held the Padres to three runs over six innings Saturday night to lead the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-4 victory over San Diego.

Vargas, who was a Triple-A Pacific Coast League All-Star, gave the Diamondbacks (82-79) a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the second, then hit a two-run homer off Padres starter Jacob Nix in the fourth for a 4-0 advantage.

The right-handed Godley (15-11) yielded five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Yoshihisa Hirano pitched a perfect ninth to record his third save.

Nix (2-5) gave up four runs on five hits and three walks in four innings.

Vargas also drew a walk and stole his first base in the majors. Daniel Descalso was 2-for-3 for the Diamondbacks with a double, a walk and three runs scored.

Descalso's one-out double in the second triggered a two-run inning. Socrates Brito then drew a walk ahead of Vargas' RBI single, which sent Brito to third.

Brito scored on a Nix wild pitch.

Descalso drew a walk to open the fourth and scored on the switch-hitting Vargas' drive into the right-field seats.

The Padres (65-96) scored three in the bottom of the fourth. Hunter Renfroe drew a walk with one out in the inning. Cory Spangenberg followed with a single, and both scored on Manuel Margot's triple to right-centre. Rookie shortstop Javier Guerra then singled home Margot for his first major league RBI.

Descalso singled to open the sixth and came around on three walks -- the final one delivered by reliever Trey Wingenter -- to up Arizona's lead to 5-3.

Eric Hosmer pulled the Padres back to within one with his 18th homer of the season with one out in the eighth off reliever Brad Ziegler.
