New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks exited Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Boston Red Sox on Friday with right hamstring tightness in the top of the fourth inning.

Hicks will undergo an MRI on the injury, Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced postgame. Hicks missed three games against the Tampa Bay Rays in the final week of the regular season with left hamstring tightness.

"He felt like it might have been cramping, so we'll just have to see," Boone said.

"Hopefully we'll have a clearer picture tomorrow when he gets up and we get some pictures, too."

Hicks, New York's No. 3 hitter in the contest, was removed shortly after connecting for a single on the 11th pitch of an at-bat against Red Sox ace Chris Sale. After Giancarlo Stanton fouled off the next pitch, Boone and a trainer came out to the field to check on Hicks at first, where the decision was made to remove him.

He was replaced by pinch-runner Brett Gardner, with New York trailing 5-0 at the time. The Yankees went on to lose 5-4.

"I got one inning, two innings, three innings, then finally during that last at-bat, it started cramping up on me," Hicks told reporters postgame. "I was trying to stay in the game, but my body language was saying that I should get out of the game.

"I feel good right now, so we'll see how [the MRI] goes and see what the result says."

Hicks walked in his first at-bat Friday. He was 1-for-4 with an RBI double in New York's wild-card game win over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.

Should the Yankees have to replace Hicks on their ALDS roster, he would not be eligible to play if the team advanced to the AL Championship Series.

Hicks, 29, hit .248 with career highs of 27 home runs and 79 RBIs for New York during the regular season.
