James van Riemsdyk's return to Philadelphia already has hit a serious speed bump.
The 29-year-old forward will miss five to six weeks with a lower-body injury, the team announced Monday.
He sustained the injury in the Flyers' second game of the season, Saturday night at Colorado. With 2:14 to play in the first period, a clearing attempt by the Avalanche's Mark Barberio hit van Riemsdyk in the lower body.
The forward signed a five-year, $35 million contract this offseason. The Flyers drafted van Riemsdyk second overall in 2007. He spent the first three seasons of his NHL career with Philadelphia before the Flyers traded him to Toronto in 2012.
He has 201 goals and 193 assists in 611 career games. He has one assist in two games this season.
