Kelvin Davis, Tourism Minister of New Zealand, has set up a working group that will tackle freedom camping issues. The idea of a working group was announced in March.
The group will have 9 people from local government, industry and key central government agencies.
The working group will help Kelvin Davis and the country to improve the way to manage freedom camping. Davis expects some recommendations for actions from the group, that will tangibly support ahead of 2018-19 peak season.
The three government agencies most involved with freedom camping will be able to advise on the policy development front. These agencies are the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), which is in charge of tourism policy, the Department of Internal Affairs, which has a role in administering the Freedom Camping Act 2011, and the Department of Conservation, whose land is covered by the Act.
The tourism industry and campers are represented by Chris Roberts of Tourism Industry Aotearoa, Grant Webster of Tourism Holdings Limited and Bruce Lochore of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association.
The group will start with the first meeting by May 4, 2018, to plan a work programme and is expected to report to Kelvin Davis by July 31, 2018, with an outline of the program and the progress made till then.
