Airbnb withdraws its contest to spend a night in the Chinese monument before the wave of protests that caused its tourism initiative.

Airbnb wanted to make a sensation by proposing, in the context of a quiz, a night on the Great Wall but faced with the outcry aroused in China and fears of a degradation of the site, the rental platform has backed away.

Since its launch last week by Airbnb, the contest "A night on the Great Wall" has elicited outrage reactions on Chinese social networks, Internet users fustigean "a publicity" at the expense of the ancient national monument.

"Regardless of their presentation, it is still a competition from a private firm that will damage ancestral remains, " a user of Weibo, Weibo's Chinese equivalent, fumed.

Administrative officials in Yanqing District, where the Great Wall segment is located on which Airbnb was planning to install temporary housing, said in a statement that they had not been warned and given no authorization.

Without the support of the authorities and rolled over on the internet, the San Francisco firm threw in the towel Tuesday,"We decided not to go all the way in. Instead, we reflect on other experiences that showcase China as a "travel destination," Airbnb said in a statement.
