The New England Patriots are waiving injury-plagued wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell, according to multiple reports on Monday.

Mitchell practiced Saturday for the first time since training camp began, but various reports in late July said the team was shopping him in trade talks. He is continuing to battle a knee issue after missing all but one preseason game in 2017.

Mitchell reportedly had a procedure on the knee before training camp opened, but the extent of the procedure is unclear. The Providence Journal reported he faced "an uphill climb" to play at all in 2018, but other outlets were more optimistic.

A fourth-round pick from Georgia in 2016, Mitchell carried injury concerns from college after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee early in the Bulldogs' 2013 season.

Through two years in the NFL, the 26-year-old has played in 14 games (six starts), all in 2016, catching 32 passes for 401 yards and four scores. He added six grabs for 70 yards in the team's Super Bowl LI victory that postseason.

Mitchell is the second Patriots wide receiver battling injury issues to be released in the last week. They cut free agent signee Jordan Matthews, who was out with a hamstring issue.

New England then signed Eric Decker, who was listed alongside Mitchell and ahead of Kenny Britt and Cordarrelle Patterson on the team's first official depth chart released over the weekend.
