Washington Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper was scratched from Thursday's starting lineup against the Atlanta Braves due to right knee soreness.

Harper was plunked just below the knee by a pitch from Atlanta's Dan Winkler in the seventh inning on Wednesday night.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Harper underwent X-rays, which were negative.

"We thought he was going to be OK," Martinez told reporters before Thursday's game. "He was out there trying to get loose this morning, and just couldn't get loose. It was pretty swollen.

"So rather than him trying to play through it, we thought the best option would be having him come off the bench if we need him. He's going to stay in and get treatment."

Harper was also hit by a pitch near the knee from Cincinnati's Austin Brice on Saturday.

Harper is batting .234 with 28 homers and 71 RBIs.

Michael A. Taylor replaced Harper in the starting lineup and played center field. Adam Eaton moved to the right.
