Twins' Morrison set for season-ending hip surgery

Reuters Last Updated at 12 Aug 2018, 12:08 IST United States

Minnesota Twins slugger Logan Morrison is headed for season-ending hip surgery that could possibly affect his 2019 season as well.

The Twins placed Morrison on the 10-day disabled list Saturday night with left hip impingement, and he told reporters he expects to undergo surgery for the "chronic" injury within the next two weeks.

"I've just been grinding through it," Morrison told reporters the Twins' 4-3 win over the Tigers. "Not helping anybody. Not helping myself or the team."

Morrison said his recovery time frame from the surgery will be four to eight months, which could have him returning as late as April of next year.

Morrison, 30, has battled injuries throughout the season, including a stint on the DL for left hip impingement in July.

"I think it's all related, for sure," Morrison said of his health issues. "I don't know exactly why. It's just one of those things. I've had it for a while."

In his first year with the Twins, Morrison hit .186 with 15 home runs and 39 RBIs. He joined Minnesota on a one-year contract worth $6.5 million in February after he hit 38 home runs as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays last season.

His deal included a vesting option for 2019 with bonuses for plate appearances that he won't reach with his season is over.

"Right now, just a lot of frustration for a lot of reasons," Morrison said. "I didn't perform the way I wanted to perform. The team didn't perform the way we wanted to perform. I feel I was a big part of the reason why we didn't perform that way."

To fill Morrison's roster spot, the Twins selected the contract of right-hander Kohl Stewart from Triple-A Rochester. The 23-year-old will make his major league debut in a start against the White Sox on Sunday.

Stewart, the fourth overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft, was 3-7 with a 4.47 ERA in 21 games (19 starts) between Double-A Chattanooga and Rochester this season.
