Panthers G Silatolu (torn meniscus) needs surgery

Carolina Panthers starting left guard Amini Silatolu will have surgery on Friday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, the team announced Tuesday.

No timetable was given for his return, but head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said Silatolu "will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis."

Silatolu, who turns 30 in September, is the favorite to replace departed All-Pro Andrew Norwell, who joined the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason for a five-year, $66.5 million deal, a record for a guard at the time. The Panthers listed Silatolu as the starter at left guard in their first depth chart released Sunday.

A second-round pick in 2012, Silatolu started 15 games as a rookie but has been primarily a backup and spot starter since. He played in 14 games last year (three starts), allowing 1.0 sack and committing a pair of penalties.

His injury marks the second major one suffered by a projected Panthers starter in training camp. Right tackle Daryl Williams is out indefinitely with a dislocated right patella and torn medial collateral ligament suffered July 28. Taylor Moton, a 2017 second-round pick who played in 16 games as a reserve last year, has taken Williams' spot on the right side.

Before the severity of Silatolu's injury was announced, head coach Ron Rivera told reporters Tuesday that undrafted rookie Brendan Mahon from Penn State would start Thursday's preseason opener at Buffalo if Silatolu sat out.

Jeremiah Sirles, who started 14 games in Minnesota over the last two years, undrafted rookie Taylor Hearn, third-year man Tyler Larsen and fourth-year veteran Greg Van Roten are also candidates to compete at the position.
