New England Patriots RB Burkhead enters concussion protocol
The New England Patriots are in a quandary regarding their running back situation for this weekend's matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars after placing Rex Burkhead in the concussion protocol on Wednesday.
The move comes after the Patriots placed fellow back Jeremy Hill on injured reserve Monday due to a torn right anterior cruciate ligament.
As a result, Sony Michel might be called to action, although the rookie running back is still not fully recovered from a procedure in August to drain fluid from his left knee. Michel did not play in New England's season opener and was limited in practice Wednesday.
"I'm doing all I can do to prepare," Michel told reporters Wednesday. "Whatever coach's plan is, I don't know what his plan is, but my mindset is prepared as if I'm playing."
Also available -- and healthy -- for New England are Kenjon Barner, whom they signed on Tuesday, and James White, while Ralph Webb and Kenneth Farrow would have to be signed off the practice squad.
Burkhead paced New England backs with 64 yards on 18 carries on Sunday in the Patriots' 27-20 win over the Houston Texans.
