Bills reportedly seeking retired Vontae Davis' signing bonus

Cornerback Vontae Davis, who retired at halftime of last week's game, is likely to forfeit his signing bonus due to the abrupt change of heart.

Davis, who said it was therapeutic to walk away from football, has earned more than $35 million in his career.

The Bills are planning to recoup the majority of his $1.5 million signing bonus. Davis is likely to keep about $700,000 in salary and bonuses out of a possible $5 million because of his in-game retirement. He earned the only 1/17th of his base salary and game-related bonuses.

The Bills received a roster exemption on Monday from the league that let them replace his spot on the roster. By placing him on the reserve/left squad list, Davis will officially not be allowed to return this season for Buffalo or any team.

Davis played just five games in 2017 with the Indianapolis Colts before suffering a torn groin muscle. Last season marked the first in Davis' career that he did not record an interception.

Davis was a 2009 first-round draft pick by Miami and played three seasons (2009-11) with the Dolphins before suiting up for the Colts for the following six seasons.
