The Pittsburgh Penguins suffered a significant blow to their blue line over the weekend, as the club announced Monday that defenseman Justin Schultz is expected to miss the next four months.
Schultz underwent surgery Sunday to repair a fractured leg sustained a day earlier against the Montreal Canadiens.
He was injured on a check by the Canadiens' Tomas Plekanec in the first period of Pittsburgh's 4-3 shootout loss in Montreal on Saturday. Plekanec checked Schultz into the boards deep in the Penguins zone, sending Schultz to the ice. As the defenseman went down, his left leg folded under the weight of his body.
He was assisted off the ice by teammates and reportedly left the arena in a walking boot and crutches.
Schultz, 28, has four assists in four games this season. Traded to the Penguins by Edmonton for a third-round pick during the 2015-16 season, Schultz has won two Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh. In two full seasons and parts of two others with the Penguins, Schultz has 90 points and a plus-57 rating in 163 games, averaging 19:14 of ice time.
