Athletics baseman Matt Chapman undergoes thumb surgery
Chapman is expected to fully recover in time for the start of spring training next year.

Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman underwent surgery on his left thumb on Tuesday, the team announced Thursday.
The operation, performed at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, featured a bone excision along the left thumb. Chapman is expected to fully recover in time for the start of spring training next year.
Chapman, 25, enjoyed a breakout season for the Athletics this year. He hit .278 with 24 home runs and 68 RBIs and also scored 100 runs in 145 games. Chapman's 52 runs scored and 42 extra-base hits led the American League in the second half.
Chapman also led the majors in defensive Wins Above Replacement at 3.5.
A former first-round pick, Chapman made his major league debut in 2017. He hit .234 with 14 home runs and 40 RBIs across his first 84 games.
