France was always one of the best bets for the world cup. This world cup has been unexpectedly a total debacle for big guns. Spain, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Portugal failed to compete with lesser known Croatia, Japan, Russia, and Uruguay.

Croatia made it to their first world cup finals and France has been the only big team to survive the falling tide for the top-ranked team.

A world cup that had Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo eliminated before the quarterfinals. It saw defending champions Germany failing to make a mark. Neymar Jr with his antics made a lot of buzzes but Philippe Coutinho’s efforts could not save five-time world champions.

This world cup had new heroes, Kylian Mbappe has been the driving force for France with three world cup goals. The PSG star has impressed everyone with his speed and accuracy.

Romelu Lukaku showed Belgium the way to semi-finals with 4 goals. The Manchester United striker scored four goals and deserves a golden ball.

Harry Kane powered England to semi-finals with 6  and may eventually win the golden boot for England.

Argentina and Messi had a problem of too many with coach Sampaoili making rash decisions like not playing Paulo Dybala in crucial matches and bringing in a rookie like Maximillian Meza. The fans blamed Sampaoli for ruining it for Lionel Messi, who has frankly speaking played his last world cup.

Spain were good in bits and pieces but should blame themselves for failing to beat Russia in normal time. They had more than 70 percent of possession and executed more than 1000 passes. The handball by Gerad Pique cost them the world cup.

Brazil could not handle the Belgian heat. De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Fellaini and Romelu Lukau were was too good for them. Neymar Jr could only make news for his rolling and falling.

Uruguay was completely blown away by Griezmann and Varane. The absence of Edinson Cavani in a do or die match jolted them.

With Croatia in finals, the world may see a new champion with Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Rakitic geared up to create history for Croatia.
