In a joint filing published by the World Trade Organization on Tuesday, the two trade powers said that the European Union proposals have been rejected by the US for an alternative to U.S. safeguard tariffs imposed on solar power goods
They said that they were unable to reach any agreement on U.S. compensation for its tariffs, but they would certainly monitor trade flow impacts due to this and will continue the discussion.
Earlier this month, dealing a setback to the solar energy industry, the US president, Donald Trump, has announced steep tariffs on solar panels dealing in the first of several potential trade restrictions.
"The decisions in the two “Section 201” safeguard cases followed findings by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) that both imported products “are a substantial cause of serious injury to domestic manufacturers,” US trade representative Robert Lighthizer said.
The tariff imposed on imported solar cells and modules will be 30% in first years. The tariffs will the eventually decline to 15% by the fourth year.
