As part of the New Patriotic Party Government’s manifesto pledge, three northern regions of Ghana will have a total of five hundred and seventy dams to implement small-scale irrigation facilities across the country.

Ahead of the rainy season, the work for three dams has already begun. The announcement was made by the Ghanian Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on the occasion of annual  Paarigbielle” festival of the chiefs and people of the Tumu Traditional Area in the Upper West Region on March 17.

According to the vice president, three northern regions will have their own dams similarly in the next year. With dams and interventions in the agriculture sector, a positive impact is expected on Ghana’s food security and lives of farmers.

Sissala area which constitutes of Sissala East and West districts will get 10 dams constructed as indicated by Bawumia.

Giving examples of other developments like Free Senior High School policy, restoration of teacher and nursing trainee allowances, the vice president pointed that the construction of dams is yet another promise being fulfilled by Akufo-Addo’s government made during 2016 election campaign.

The policy also known as one village one dam a total of 570 dams will be constructed to boost irrigation and farming sector.

According to Bawumia, the government is willing to provide every facility under its power to the agriculture sector and is trying to increase participation of private investors which will add value to common crops such as cotton and maize.
