Given the pivotal role of Syrian national core competencies in shaping up the profile of learners for the 21st Century and the focus of the new curriculum on preparation for life and work, the skills development dimension becomes a crucial endeavour to be pursued as a continuum across K-12 stages.
This workshop aims to enhance the capacities of curriculum specialists and textbook authors in dealing with integrating/promoting skills development in the context of developing and implementing the new Syrian curriculum.
The Syrian Ministry of Education (MoE) and NCCD are keen to promote a comprehensive and systematic concept of curriculum that includes a curriculum framework, as well as subject curricula/syllabuses that spell out relevant learning experiences for students.
UNESCO Office in Beirut, at the request of MoE and NCCD, since December 2015 continuously provided technical support to the curriculum process in Syria.
In the context of implementing revised textbooks in grades 1, 4, 7 and 9 starting with the school year 2017-2018, and the preparation of a new generations of textbooks for grades 2, 5, 8 and 10 to be introduced next school year 2018-2019, UNESCO office in Beirut received a new request from NCCD to co-organize a workshop focusing on skills development.
The workshop is seen as an essential activity for the process of finalizing the second generation of new textbooks for grades 2, 5, 8 and 10, to be implemented starting next September. It will delve into issues of skills development in line with the new Curriculum Framework, as well as with the UNICEF-led LSCE initiative by focusing on "Learning to Do" and Learning to Be" dimensions.
With the collaborative effort of all participants from different specialized fields of education, the workshop seeks to contribute to textbook improvement by emphasizing meaningful learning experiences to be considered for developing life and career skills.
