UIDAI to roll out face recognition for Aadhaar authentication
According to the authorities, it will provide face authentication to select Authentication Service Agencies only on need basis
The Unique Identification Authority of India has announced to roll-out face authentication feature by July 1 2018 to add another layer of security for inclusive authentication of Aadhaar card holders and avoid the issues regarding fingerprint authentication.
To provide inclusive authentication, face recognition feature will also be introduced to verify the identity. It will have following advantages:
- Provide additional choice to those facing issues with their fingerprint or iris authentication.
- Face-feature with liveness detection can be used as an additional tool to increase security.
However, face authentication will only be used along with the fusion of previous authentication tool –fingerprint, iris scan or OTP authentication. According to the authorities, it will provide face authentication to select Authentication Service Agencies only on need basis.
UIDAI will work with the biometric service providers to integrate face modality the certified registered devices and may also additionally provide standalone Registered Devices (RD) service as required by the ecosystem.
