The head of Western Greece Apostolos Katsifaras expressed optimism about the conditions created for the region of Western Greece to become a distinct tourist destination. In particular, he referred to the estimates for an increase in tourism in 2018, particularly from the tourist markets of France, Germany, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus.
"The messages are positive. We are expecting a new record of arrivals," he said, referring also to the upward trends recorded in 2017, with a 22 percent increase in arrivals at Araxos Airport, 21 percent at Aktion Airport, 12 percent at Patras Port and 15 percent at Katakolo Port.
"Tourism has a particular developmental interest in the region of Western Greece, so we will step up our actions in this direction," Apostolos Katsifaras added, highlighting the development prospects and the contribution of tourism to the local economy.
While talking about Greece as the whole, according to statistica.com website, the number of arrivals in 2014 was over 21.5 million at the accommodation establishments in Greece. The number reached to 23.7 million in the year 2016.
These statistics also reiterated that the number of arrivals in Greece is on the rise since the year 2014 to 2016. The tourist accommodations considered for the surveys were hotels, holiday and other short-stay accommodation, camping grounds, recreational vehicle parks and trailer parks
