Soccer-McCarthy appointed Ireland manager, Kenny to take over in 2020

Updated: 25-11-2018 20:23 IST
Mick McCarthy has been appointed Ireland manager but will be replaced by former Dundalk boss Stephen Kenny after the 2020 European Championship, the Football Association of Ireland said on Sunday.

McCarthy, who managed Ireland from 1996 to 2002, takes over from Martin O'Neill who left the role along with his assistant Roy Keane on Wednesday after a run of six matches without victory.

"I'm honoured and excited to be back with the Republic of Ireland. I am delighted that the FAI Board and CEO have given me this opportunity to lead the team to EURO 2020," McCarthy said in a statement.

"I am looking forward to getting started and embracing this challenge to qualify for EURO 2020, where it would be fantastic to play in front of the Ireland supporters in Aviva Stadium." (Reporting by Shrivathsa Sridhar in Bengaluru Editing by Toby Davis)
