Mikaela Shiffrin moved within one victory of the all-time World Cup slalom wins total as she overcame challenging visibility and course conditions for her 34th triumph at Killington, Vermont, on Sunday.

The overall World Cup champion's convincing victory by more than half a second, after she recorded one minute 43.25 seconds for her two runs, saw her equal Swiss Vreni Schneider's 34 wins and close in on Austrian Marlies Schild's all-time record of 35.

Shiffrin skied the fastest first run, then held on in the second for victory despite a hard charge by Slovakia's Petra Vlhova, who finished second 0.57 seconds back, while Sweden's Frida Hansdotter came third, 1.08 behind the American victor.

A crowd of 15,000 watched the home favourite win her second slalom race of the season and take the 45th World Cup win of her glittering career in all disciplines.

"I could hear you from the start," the 23-year-old Shiffrin told the roaring crowd. "That was the most unbelievable thing I've ever experienced." (Reporting by Gene Cherry in Raleigh, North Carolina Editing by Ian Chadband)
