England beat Sri Lanka by 42 runs in the third and final test in Colombo on Monday to complete a 3-0 series sweep.

Chasing an improbable 327 to gain a consolation victory, Sri Lanka were dismissed for 284 at the start of the final session of the fourth day at the Sinhalese Sports Club.

Kusal Mendis (86) and Roshen Silva (65) scored a bulk of the runs for the hosts, who had conceded a 96-run first innings lead and resumed the day on 53-4.

Spin duo of Moeen Ali (4-92) and Jack Leach (4-72) shared eight wickets between them to ensure England became just the third team to win a test series 3-0 in Sri Lanka. (Reporting by Amlan Chakraborty in New Delhi; Editing by John O'Brien)
