Patriots activate RB Burkhead from IR, release Tobin
The New England Patriots activated running back Rex Burkhead from injured reserve on Monday, clearing a roster spot by releasing offensive lineman Matt Tobin.
Burkhead, 28, went on IR after Week 3 with a neck injury, but he is eligible to play as soon as this week against the Minnesota Vikings.
He had 24 carries for 86 yards and three catches for 31 yards in three games before getting hurt.
Signed as a free agent in 2017, Burkhead had 518 total yards and eight total touchdowns on 94 touches across 10 games last year. He has missed time due to injury in four of his six NFL seasons.
The team has relied on James White and rookie first-round pick Sony Michel while also using wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson as a running back in recent weeks.
Tobin, 28, spent training camp with the Patriots but didn't make it through final cuts. He latched on briefly with the San Francisco 49ers before returning to the Patriots in November, but he has yet to be active in a game this season.
The sixth-year veteran started 21 games over his first four seasons in Philadelphia and played in 15 as a reserve for Seattle last season.
