Google to end its URL shortening service

Google recently announced shutting down of its URL shortening service, goo.gl.

According to the company, new and anonymous users will not be able to generate links through goo.gl after April 13. The service as of now is still available for another year for its existing users,post which it will be discontinued entirely.

Michael Hermanto, Firebase Software Engineer told that the URL shortener was introduced in 2009. According to him, Google is now focussing its efforts and replacing the URL shortener with Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL), which more location specific for Android, iOS and web apps.

Existing users will be able to export data from the goo.gl console but after some time, the shortened links will continue to redirect but they won't be taken to the new Firebase console.
