Scotland, after a record year in 2017 for creating eco-friendly energy, has become a world leader in generating electricity from the renewable energy sources.

A 26 percent increase from 2016, the nation has sourced 68 percent (more than two-thirds) of its electricity from renewable energy sources.

There were 34 percent and 9 percent increase respectively in the wind and hydro generation from last year. According to the Scottish government officials, the rise was 45-percentage points higher than the rest of the UK's equivalent figure.

According to the Energy, minister Paul Wheelhouse: "These figures show that Scotland's renewable energy sector is stronger than ever." He also added that there are more projects in the pipeline for Scotland.

As per the new statistics, it is believed that for providing own electricity by renewable energy sources, Scotland has now become one of the world's top countries. More usage of renewable energy for electricity generation means less use of fossil fuel. Fossil fuels are responsible for accelerating climate change when burnt.

Iceland is the country that generates most clean electricity per person on earth according to Australian energy company Click Energy.
