Los Angeles Kings forward Ilya Kovalchuk will miss about four weeks after undergoing an ankle procedure on Sunday, the Kings announced.

Kovalchuk had an ankle bursectomy to remove an inflamed bursa that had grown into an infection.

The veteran Russian forward, who returned to the NHL this season after five years with SKA St. Petersburg, has five goals and nine assists in 25 games.

Prior to the procedure, the 35-year-old had gone scoreless in his past 11 games.

The Kings signed Kovalchuk to a three-year, $18.75 million contract before the season.
