Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe plans to visit the United States April 17-20 for talks with President Donald Trump, he said on Monday.

Abe said he would ask Trump to bring up the issue of past North Korean abductions of Japanese citizens, during the US president's expected summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Japan has sounded out the North Korean government about a bilateral summit, and Pyongyang has discussed the possibility of a leaders' meeting with Japan, Japan's Asahi newspaper said last week.

Fears of a trade war have mounted this month as US President Donald Trump's administration imposed tariffs on steel and aluminium imports and unveiled plans to slap tariffs on up to USD 60 billion of imports from China.

"We want to avoid falling into a bilateral deal" with the United States in exchange for exemptions from steel and aluminium tariffs, Aso said.
